The invention discloses a novel high-shrinkage polyester fiber and a preparation method thereof. The novel high-shrinkage polyester fiber is obtained by esterification, polymerization and spinning of 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol monomers and dicarboxylic acid monomers. The glass transition temperature of the fiber is 40–60℃, and it has a shrinkage rate of more than 60% in hot water above 40℃. The fiber is prepared from novel polyester chips, which are obtained by esterification and polymerization of 2-methyl-1,3-propanediol monomers and dicarboxylic acid monomers. The novel high-shrinkage polyester fiber of the invention has a high hygrothermal shrinkage rate, broadening the application scope of polyester fibers.
