A method for operating a device for manufacturing products is described, comprising the following steps: acquiring at least one quality data set (10, 10’) comprising measured values of one or more quality parameters each corresponding to a characteristic of the product; acquiring at least one associated machine data set (20, 20’) comprising actual values of a plurality of adjustable machine parameters of the device; temporally assigning the quality data set (10, 10’) to the machine data set (20, 20’) and generating a first data set comprising temporally associated measured values and actual values; repeating the preceding steps at least once to generate at least one second data set (30’); determining correlations between the one or more quality parameters and the machine parameters by comparing the acquired data sets (30, 30’) and creating a control model for the device; and providing corresponding set values for at least one of the adjustable machine parameters according to the control model based on set values of the one or more quality parameters.
